George R.R. Martin said he’d be reading from either The Winds of Winter or his in-progress history of the Targaryens Fire and Blood (fans are calling it George R.R. Martin’s Silmarillion ) at this weekend’s MystiCon fan convention in Roanoke, Virginia.

Unfortunately, no plans have been made to stream Martin’s reading. But one festival attendee has provided us with an early consolation prize: a portion of Martin’s Q&A questions.

Authors often get asked fantastic questions at fan conventions by dedicated readers intimately familiar with the writers’ series. This can lead to new insights into the events of our favorite book series. This Q&A is not quite so edifying.

From the portion of the Q&A we see it seems that Martin is being barraged with inane questions to which we already know the answers from a moderator of some sort. Martin replies with the brevity the questions deserve.

“When is the next book coming out?”

“When it’s done.”

“Is Jon Snow dead?”

No reply.

Do you watch the TV show?

“Sure.”

“Do you like the TV show?”

“Sure.”

“No really, is Jon Snow dead?”

Damn, what a wasted opportunity. Unfortunately, this is the only portion of George R.R. Martin’s MystiCon appearance that’s shown up on the Internet so far.

We do know from festival attendees that Martin spoke at length on other topics, so there’s still hope that longer portions of his Q&A will soon circulate.
