The new Arrow Season 5 episode 10 promo teases the idea of Black Siren vs. Black Canary. In the opening moments, Laurel is shown in the bunker telling Ollie she was saved and it appears time travel was involved.
“She was dead, now she’s not,” Wild Dog says. “Well, that’s time travel for you,” Oliver responds.
The time-travel element is very interesting and probably means White Canary would be involved. But why wouldn’t Sara tell Oliver that Laurel is alive, and why are we seeing her six months later? There’s been no sign of Laurel on Legends… Regardless, all of that dialogue suggests the Laurel in the bunker is the real, Earth-1 version. But by the end of the clip, not so much. We see Black Siren break out of prison and destroy the Black Canary statue with sonic waves. So which one is it?
I’d really like to believe the Arrow writers wouldn’t reveal a huge twist in a promo. I’m operating under the assumption that most of whatever these promos are leading us to believe isn’t what’s about to happen in the series. I think the only way Arrow can dig itself out of this hole is if some version of both the characters return. There’s a couple options to do this.
The first is that the Laurel who showed up in the bunker is from Earth-2, meaning she’s Black Siren. She broke out of Star Labs jail, as we saw in the trailer, and with the help of Prometheus hoped to go undercover to get information on Ollie’s plans. Then, she has a change of heart, deciding to turn good and become a part of Team Arrow and take the name Black Canary to fulfill Laurel’s legacy. This would be cool, because Earth-2 Laurel is actually a metahuman, as she was in the comics. This is certainly the most probable theory, considering what the promos have shown us, which is that we’ll only be getting Black Siren. But still, this seems like too easy a route for a show in its fifth season.

The next option is the Laurel in the bunker is Earth-2 Black Siren. With the help of Prometheus, she breaks out of jail. She makes up the whole story about White Canary saving her with the Waverider. Oliver and the team figures it out, and defeats her. Then, out of nowhere, someone else entirely takes on the Black Canary mantle… perhaps another version of Laurel, possibly Earth-3. Still, kind of an underwhelming option.
The last, and craziest, possibility is that Earth-1 Laurel and Earth-2 Laurel are both alive. This is the less predictable way to go. We know for sure that Laurel coming back isn’t going to be as simple as a resurrection. And, if we see Earth-1 Laurel at all, Black Siren is also going to be involved, as the trailers have proved. I don’t have any predictions about how this could play out, all I know is a stingy arc to bring Laurel back will really upset fans and Greg Berlanti better have something crazy up his sleeve.
