A second, and very questionable, Arrow Season 5 trailer suggests the Laurel Lance we saw in the midseason finale may not be the Black Canary we know and love. ARROW SEASON 5 SPOILERS AHEAD.
This clip proves there is much more to this story than Laurel simply returning in the flesh. The same Laurel we saw randomly appear in the Arrow bunker, who Ollie seemed to assume was Earth-1 Laurel in the last episode 10 promo, is actually a metahuman. This means she can’t be Earth-1 Laurel, who used a sonic device to produce the canary cry. The canary cry is this version of Laurel’s inherent ability, which means she’s most likely Black Siren.
“That’s not our Laurel,” Oliver tells Felicity when Curtis is thrown across the room by the canary cry. “Finally, someone figured it out,” this Laurel says.
Last we saw Black Siren, she was locked up in the STAR Labs facility in Central City. The Flash kept her a secret from Team Arrow so Ollie, Sara and Detective Lance could live in peace without knowing their beloved has a very evil doppleganger. In addition to the meta canary cry, this version of Laurel talks, walks and has the same sass as Black Siren did during her episode on The Flash. This begs the question of how she escaped prison. Could it have been with the help of Prometheus? Using Earth-2 Laurel to screw with Ollie’s mind, and destroy the Black Canary’s legacy, sounds exactly like something the big bad would do for revenge.
“There will definitely be a ‘dark silver lining’ when Oliver finds out what’s really going on,” Executive Producer Wendy Mericle teased to TV Line. This is the same executive producer who previously hinted to fans that Laurel would be “alive and well” this season. Apparently, what she really meant was “alive and evil,” unless this scene isn’t telling the whole truth.
I think it’s safe to say The CW wouldn’t reveal this big Earth-2 Laurel twist if there wasn’t an even bigger Laurel twist on the way. And considering Mericle’s past statements, I want to take them at face value and believe Earth-1 Laurel is still alive somehow. Stephen Amell has said this season is all about legacy, and mentioned in a Facebook Live after the midseason finale that there would be a resurrection and the Black Canary statue would be torn down.
Both those teasers suggest we’ll see a version of Black Canary return to the series. Whether it’s a reformed Earth-2 Laurel, or a resurrected Earth-1 Laurel is the big question moving forward. It could even be possible Black Siren and Earth-1 Laurel are both alive and Prometheus has some ultra sadistic plan to make Oliver suffer a fate far worse than death.
