Batman: Arkham Knight and Batman: Arkham VR marked the end of Rocksteady’s trilogy, but recent rumors may reveal what’s next for Gotham City in games. Apparently WB Montreal has been hard at work on a game featuring Damian Wayne as Robin with the Penguin as a possible villain. Tweets from Kotaku news editor Jason Schreier spill the beans.
Last night was a night of big premieres at Geoff Keighley’s Game Awards, and Schreier believed a Batman reveal was going to be part of the festivities. Just before the show, he said he expected to see “new Zelda footage, new Mass Effect footage, Prey, maybe Guardians of the Galaxy and perhaps some bats and/or men.” As those that watched the stream will know, all of those teases became a reality except the last one.
As the night continued, Schreier’s followers started asking questions. In concession, he pledged to reveal everything he knew about the game if it didn’t show up. Because this respected journalist is a man of his word, he later leaked that WB Montreal’s next game will feature Damian Wayne, the nemesis system from Shadow Of Mordor and a debut trailer that ends on Penguin. That being said, it was qualified that these details come from just one trusted source and should be taken with a grain of salt.
For those not so familiar with the Batman universe, Damian Wayne is the son of Bruce Wayne and Talia al Ghul. He was reintroduced to the main comic continuity in 2006 and eventually became the fifth character to take on the task of being Batman’s faithful sidekick, Robin.
From these tweets it’s not totally clear if the game will feature Robin as the primary playable protagonist or if it just takes place at a point in the timeline where Batman and Damian are working together. Schreier does refer to the project as “WB Montreal’s Damian game,” but that doesn’t necessarily confirm him as the main focus.
What we do know is that WB Montreal has been mostly silent since Batman: Arkham Origins released in 2013. A year ago, job postings suggested that two triple-A games based in the DC universe were in development there. This Damian concept could be one of them. As for what’s going on with Batman: Arkham Knight’s creators, statements have been made that imply Rocksteady may be leaving Gotham’s savior behind.
With no Game Awards reveal to speak of, the next major event to look forward to is the PlayStation Experience keynote on Saturday at 1 p.m. EST. Batman games have historically leaned towards Sony consoles, so that prospect is reasonable.
Batman: Arkham Knight is available now on PS4, Xbox One and PC.
