A new developer diary for Birthdays the Beginning, featuring Harvest Moon creator and Toybox Inc. co-founder Yasuhiro Wada, debuted this week. The new clip is only a few minutes long but manages to introduce several mechanics that haven’t been mentioned in previous Birthdays the Beginning previews. It’s also apparently the first in a new series from the studio.
This week’s developer diary focuses on the world development in Birthdays the Beginning, teaching players how to go about sculpting their dream planet and how a variety of factors (like temperature or environmental conditions) will impact local fauna. Wada also outlines differences between Macro and Micro mode. The former will apparently feel similar to the Creative mode in many sandbox games, with players able to see the entirety of their cube world and advance time at will.
Micro mode will play more like a standard campaign. Players lose control of the timeline but they’ll be able to get up close and personal with all of the dinosaurs, mammals and other creatures that spawn on their planet. As time progresses, the player gains access to larger portions of the world, but it will become harder to discover new species. Fans also learned it’ll be possible to revive individual species after they’re extinct. Wada says it won’t be an easy feat to accomplish but those willing to make the necessary (and drastic) changes to their world will see their favorite creatures return to life.
