According to THR, Paul Feig’s remake of 1984’s Ghostbusters is tracking for a $40 million to $50 million debut.
Early estimates indicate that Ghostbusters, which debuts in mid-July, will see a $50 million box office return. The movie cost $154 million to make.
Certain social circles were outraged by even the trailer, making it the most-disliked YouTube trailer in movie history. Picking misogynists out of angry Twitter posts or comments sections about the movie is like picking fish out of a sad, lonely barrel, but more savvy keyboard warriors insisted that they were upset because there was no “ passing the torch,” or because out of all remakes in the world this one was the most egregious, or because the moon was in the seventh house and Jupiter aligned with Mars.
That being said, according to a recent Fandango survey (via Screen Rant ), Ghostbusters is the summer’s most anticipated comedy, beating out Central Intelligence and Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising. And according to early pre-release tracking, women over the age of 25 are by far the most interested in purchasing a ticket for Ghostbusters.
Sony has three weeks left to light a fire with younger women and normal, level-headed males. Even Bill Murray has come out to emphatically stamp the film with his approval after years of turning down Ghostbusters pitches. “I couldn’t be happier. These girls did a really good job,” said Murray. “It was only because I knew these girls were funny… There is no quit in these girls.”
Other tracking services are comparing Ghostbusters’ debut to movies like Men in Black III (debut: $69.3 million) and The Amazing Spider-Man ($62 million), along with obvious comparisons to Feig’s other fare like Spy ($29.1 million) and Bridesmaids ($26.2 million).
Ghostbusters stars Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, Leslie Jones and Melissa McCarthy and has a release date of July 15.
