While a full trailer is expected tomorrow, today saw the release of a teaser trailer for The Conjuring 2, believed to be subtitled The Enfield Poltergeist (thought that’s not in evidence on this first international teaser trailer). The new teaser trailer for The Conjuring 2 relies more on footage from the original The Conjuring than anything new, but it does provide quick glimpses of our new haunted house, plus a scary device that looks to be The Conjuring 2 version of the first movie’s notorious mirrored music box. When it comes to the sequel to one of the best horror movies of the past decade, I’ll take what I can get.

UPDATE: A full-blown American teaser trailer is out now! Watch it! Watch it! Watch it!

The spooky device from The Conjuring 2 teaser trailer is a zoetrope, which works on the same principle as film, projecting the illusion of motion by quicly presenting sequential images. It’s a device rich with scary possibilities, plus a likely meta-commentary on how film itself generates horror. While film provides the illusion of continuous motion, it is a trick, perhaps as illusory as the veil between the worlds of the living and the dead. Or as illusory as Ed and Lorraine Warren’s con-artist lies.
