At long last, Dark Souls 3 is finally available in stores around the globe, bringing a new string of challenges and monstrosities for the Dark Souls community to overcome. Of course, while many fans take pride in carving through each new entry in the series, figuring out the weaknesses of each boss and discovering all the secrets hidden throughout the game, many people need a bit of help to make it through each new Dark Souls release. So we’re putting together guides to help you get through the game’s toughest encounters.

In this post, we’re giving you a rundown on High Lord Wolnir: one of the largest and deceptively simple boss fights in Dark Souls 3 . While there are a couple of strategies one could use to take down the enormous cadaver, the one outlined here is by far the easiest for players to replicate. Just remember that you’ve already reached the latter half of the DS3 campaign. So even knowing how to beat a boss doesn’t mean you won’t need multiple attempts to accomplish the feat.

High Lord Wolnir is the only boss in Dark Souls 3 that makes the Curse-rotted Greatwood seem reasonably sized. But the boss’ size can ultimately be used to the player’s advantage. Stay close enough to Wolnir that his swipe attacks sail through the air behind you but close enough to the boss’ limbs that you can easily attack the glowing bracelets on his arms when they’re down.

Identifying the Wolnir’s weakness is only half the battle, though. Players need to destroy the bracelets in a specific order to avoid a protacted, increasingly difficult fight against Wolnir. Start with the bracelet on Wolnir’s left arm, which is easiest to reach after the boss whiffs on a slam attack. You’ll occasionally get other opportunities but they’re few and far between. You’ll also need to watch out for the poisonous fog that Wolnir occasionally emits. If the boss belches it, either get close enough to Wolnir that the fog lands and dissipates behind you or run away from the boss until the fog begins to clear.

Once you’ve destroyed the left bracelet, switch focus to the two bands on Wolnir’s right arm. At some point, the boss will crawl forward. When this happens, turn and sprint in the same direction because getting caught behind Wolnir will lead to a quick death. Continue to hack away at the bracelets until you’ve destroyed them both. Hopefully you’ll finish the fight before Wolnir crawls forward a second time, leaving little space between the boss and the rock face at the back of his lair, but don’t freak out if you need to finish the fight at the back of the arena.

Your primary goal should be to take down Wolnir before the boss has an opportunity to summon more than a wave or two of minions. It’s relatively easy to deal with a small number of additional enemies in this fight but you’re going to be in trouble if there aren’t any safe spots on the battlefield where you can drink an Estus flask.
