When you enter Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2, you’ll begin your adventure in a tutorial that will show you the basics of fighting in the game. You’ll need these skills to battle your way through some of the toughest enemies in the Dragon Ball Universe.
However, most of the fighting in Xenoverse 2 is similar to the first game. But if you haven’t played the first game, we’ve compiled this handy battle guide to give insight on the basics of fighting in Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2, as well as explain how the attributes and powers are obtained.
BASICS
The basics of battle in Xenoverse 2 are as follows:
Move with the L analog
X is to jump
Circle is your Ki blast (hold for a stronger Ki blast)
Square is punch
Triangle is kick (press and hold to perform a guard break)
Perform combos using combination of Square and Triangle
L1 is to guard
L1 + Circle to throw opponents (must be close enough)
R1 is to lock onto targets (flick the left analog left and right to switch targets if going up against multiple enemies)
Hold R2 to open Super Menu on the bottom right corner and then press the corresponding command to perform a Super Move. This will require a bar of Ki to use.
Press R2 + L2 + (either Triangle or Square) to perform an Ultra Attack Move. This requires your Ki gauge to be full.
Press L2 + R2 + X to perform and Evasive Skill, which will allow your character to get out of sticky situations.
Right on the Control Pad opens the item menu. Press the corresponding command to use an item mid-battle.
In the top left-hand corner is your health bar, Ki gauge and stamina gauge. The Ki Gauge determines if you can use your Super Attacks. This gauge will slowly fill up on its own, but you’ll need to obtain a Power Charge Super Attack to charge your gauge faster.
Your stamina gauge will also slowly fill up as you go, and this determines how much you can dash or use your vanish abilities.
These are rather simple commands and you can explore enough of each area by foot. You can go underwater with no need to worry about oxygen levels. However, most of your fighting will be done in mid-air, so you’ll need to acclimate to fighting while airborne.
MID-AIR FIGHTING
Hold down X to ascend, which will cause your character to float and move in the air. Press and hold the left analog stick to descend.
Press L2 and the left analog to do a boost dash. This will allow your character to fly through the air much faster for exploring each area or to get into battle that much quicker.
If you press X and L2 at the same time, you’ll do an even more powerful dash, but be aware that this will drain one stamina bar from your stamina gauge (we’ll go in-depth about stamina further down). If you press X while doing this powerful dash, you’ll automatically show up behind your locked on target.
While you’re on the ground or in the air, you can flick L2 while tilting the left analog to do a sidestep to avoid Ki blasts.
If you find yourself being attacked, you can use an Evasive Skill or simply press X to vanish behind your opponent. This is an easy way to get out of devastating combos but will require a bar of stamina, so be mindful of how much stamina you have.
NON-BATTLE COMMANDS
Some missions will allow for you to have allies in battle. They will assist you to defeat an opponent but sometimes they will be knocked out. You can revive them by simply going over to their fallen body and locking onto them. Stand next to the body and a gauge will appear that signals you are reviving them and you’ll have to wait till it’s full. But be careful, you are unprotected while trying to revive your teammates so do this when the coast is clear.
You can also use the Up button on the control pad to open up your scouter. This will allow you to see hidden items in an area or hidden enemies.
If you see an item, go next to it and press Circle to pick it up.
Some missions will allow you to go between areas. There will be time portals that will take you back and forth between areas, what you’ll need to do is lock on to the portal and then press Circle when you’re close enough.
ATTRIBUTES
You character’s attributes determine how you do in battle and how you want to fight. There are six attributes you can increase. The first three are self-explanatory, but it’s worth describing the attack attributes in a bit more detail.
Max Health
Max Ki
Max Stamina
Basic Attacks -- determines how strong your strikes and Ki blasts are.
Strike Supers -- determines the power of your melee Super Attacks, Ultimate Attacks and Evasive Skills.
Ki Blast Supers -- determines the intensity of your Ki Blast Super Attacks, Ultimate Attacks and Evasive Skills.
Every time you level up you gain 2-3 attribute points you can boost your stats with so choose wisely.
Your character’s equipment can also determine which stats are boosted and decreased, so be sure to take a look at what each equipment does before equipping it.
TYPE OF ATTACKS
As was mentioned above there are a few different types of attacks you can use in Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 . There are melee attacks, Ki blast attacks and Charge attacks. Each type of attack has their own symbol and your character’s attributes affect how effective each are.
Melee attacks are moves that use kicks and punches while Ki blast attacks use your character’s energy to inflict long-ranged attacks. Charge attacks can allow your character to charge their Ki and guard against attacks.
You can change your Skill Set while in Conton City, so choose your sets wisely.
