Square-Enix and Nintendo have teamed up to bring new Dragon Quest VII players a little guidance with a highly-detailed quick start guide available for free here.
“If you’re new to the series, the vast, epic scope might seem a bit overwhelming at first,” Nintendo stated in a blog post announcing the guide. “Luckily, Nintendo’s resident DRAGON QUEST expert has created a step-by-step game plan for the first 20 hours of the game.”
Square-Enix and Nintendo’s official quick start guide walks players through the first 20 hours of gameplay from Pilchard Bay in the present to Alltrade Abbey in the past, where you can first choose to change your class.
Nintendo also shared some ways for players to take advantage of Dragon Quest VII ’s online features, including Traveler’s Tablets that can be shared with friends via StreetPass and bonus content that will be distributed until Sept. 30.
Dragon Quest VII is a famously meaty JRPG that can easily take over 100 hours, not including side quests, job class mastery and talking with your party. While the Dragon Quest games are super popular in Japan, they’ve struggled to take off in quite the same way overseas. This quick start guide may be one way for Nintendo and Square-Enix to help the franchise gain traction in the West.

In our favorable review, we said, “ Dragon Quest VII is very enjoyable and simple. You don’t have to worry about the consequences of changing the past or anything like that, you travel to the past and it changes your present for the better. Simple as that… Fortunately, once you get to the meat of the plot, your patience is rewarded with fun characters and an engaging story.”
