Driveclub VR was formally announced on Wednesday morning, weeks after the first mention of the project appeared on the Japanese PlayStation Blog, and we finally have more information about the VR-ready version of Driveclub coming to PlayStation VR later this year.
Word of a VR-ready Driveclub port first broke back in July after the PlayStation Blog published (and subsequently pulled) a blog post about the unannounced project. The text was pulled pretty fast, before most sites could get a good idea of what to expect from Driveclub VR , but the post was live long enough for word to spread. Now, Sony is finally opening up about its upcoming VR racing game, which was finally made official on the first day of gamescom.
Here’s what Sony says we can expect from Driveclub VR :
Game modes: Online virtual reality multiplayer race modes and an action-packed single player career are joined by drifting and time trial challenges.
Tracks: New and classic Driveclub tracks are brought to life through the power of PlayStation VR, including five all-new Urban locations.
A closer look: More than 80 cars are recreated with immaculate detail for players to explore up close with Inspection Mode.
Cruise control: A little time to kick back, open the throttle or just coast and explore any track, in any country at your leisure in Cruise Mode.
Virtual passenger: An immersive thrill ride through exciting replays of hot laps as players watch themselves handle their greatest challenges from a unique viewpoint in Passenger Mode.
Unfortunately, there isn’t a new trailer for Driveclub VR . That said, it can be difficult for developers to communicate the benefits of virtual reality outside the medium particularly in two-dimensional media like a trailer. So we’re not entirely convinced a new promotional clip would be all that useful for consumers, unless it included footage of new cars and/or tracks from Driveclub VR .
Driveclub VR is in development for PlayStation 4. The latest iteration of the PS4 exclusive driving game is expected to debut before the end of 2016.
