Gearbox Publishing has just announced that it will soon be releasing Duke Nukem 3D: 20th Anniversary World Tour for the Nintendo Switch via the Nintendo eShop on June 23. The announcement also contained news that from today up until July 7, players can pre-purchase or purchase the game for half off the price (discounted from $9.99 to $4.99).
Originally released in 1996, Duke Nukem 3D is credited as one of the games (alongside Wolfenstein 3D and Doom) that popularized the first-person shooter. Duke Nukem 3D is most known for its immersive and interactive environments, gameplay, crass humor, and its satirical portrayal of the archetypal Hollywood actions heroes (made much better by Jon St. John’s superb voicing of Duke). The gameplay mostly follows the action and humor-filled adventures of Duke Nukem. Players can use a variety of weapons from Duke’s arsenal such as the “Mighty Foot”, pistol, shotgun, rocket-propelled grenade launcher, land mines, and freeze rays.
After Duke Nukem 3D, no games had been released by 3D Realms until Gearbox Software acquired the rights to the character and released the universally panned sequel Duke Nukem Forever in 2011. Five years later, and 20 years after its original release, a remastered version of Duke Nukem 3D titled Duke Nukem 3D: 20th Anniversary World Tour has been released commemorating the game and featuring a number of changes such as improved graphics and audio including re-recordings from Jon St. John. Lastly, the re-release also added an all-new episode five, which was previously unreleased in the original game. This new episde introduces a new weapon and a new enemy type for Duke to incinerate. Duke Nukem 3D: 20th Anniversary World Tour was released for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC via Steam in 2016.
For the Nintendo Switch version, everything included in the 2016 version will be added, along with specific console improvements such as optional gyroscopic aiming, HD rumble, motion controls, and local wireless multiplayer.
Duke Nukem 3D: 20th Anniversary World Tour for the Nintendo Switch will launch on June 23, and will be 50% off until July 7.
