Electronic Arts will be bringing a lot of Star Wars our way in the coming years, including games set in the Star Wars universe from the developers of Dead Space and Titanfall, plus Star Wars: Battlefront 2. But one game we won’t be seeing is a cancelled RTS (real-time strategy), complete with Blizzard-esque hero units like Luke Skywalker.
Video from the cancelled Star Wars RTS popped up on Vimeo, posted by an account belonging to someone claiming to be Elise Baldwin , formerly an audio director at EA.
The untitled proto-game has a cartoony look, with battles set in dense, frenetic environments. But despite the mass mayhem at play in the streets of Mos Eisley, the actual snippets of gameplay we see look much more squad-based, with a perspective that hews closely to Luke Skywalker and small units of Rebel Alliance troops steered by the player.
Outside of a Lego mobile game, the now-cancelled EA game would have been the first Star Wars RTS since 2006’s Star Wars: Empire at War.
The untitled Star Wars RTS was only about a year into development, which certainly fits with the unfinished look of the gameplay. This particular mission is absent of any material from the new Star Wars movies — no Episode VIII spoilers here — with old school X-Wing designs.
While nothing about this leaked footage suggests a must-have, it’s still disappointing that we may have many years to wait until another Star Wars RTS comes along.
