On Friday from CES in Las Vegas , the matchups for the ELeague Major 2017 were announced for Jan. 22 to Jan. 29.
Broadcast on TBS, the ELeague Major will feature CS:GO (Counter-Strike: Global Offensive) as the game that the teams will be playing. This will be the tenth major CS:GO tournament and the first major of 2017. Sixteen teams will compete in group play with the top eight advancing to a single-elimination tournament. While most of the tournament will be broadcast on Twitch.tv, TBS will be picking up the finals of the ELeague Major 2017 on Jan. 29.
The action begins on Sunday Jan. 22 with the following eight matchups starting the action, featuring eight legend teams and eight challenger teams.
Game 1: Astralis vs. North
Game 2: Fnatic vs. G2 Esports
Game 3: SK Gaming vs. HellRaisers
Game 4: Virtus.Pro vs. Optic
Game 5: Na'vi vs. Mousesports
Game 6: Team Liquid vs. EnVyUs
Game 7: Astralis vs. GODSENT
Game 8: Flipside vs. Faze
This will be the third season that the ELeague will be broadcast on TBS. The first two seasons, which both were successful for the network, featured two different formats which ranged from a 24-team league to qualifiers and playoffs. For the ELeague Major 2017, the first place team will receive $500,000 while second place receives $150,000. Here is how the tournament will work:
- Each team from the first seed will play a team from the fourth seed. Each team from the second seed will play a team from the third seed. These teams will be randomly selected. These matches will determine the first round.
- In the second round, the teams with a 1-0 record will face each other and the teams with a 0-1 record will face each other.
- In the third round, teams with a 2-0 record will face each other. The winners of these matches will move on to the Playoffs. The teams with a 1-1 record will face each other to determine their places in the next round. The teams with a 0-2 record will face each other and the losers of these matches will be eliminated from the tournament.
- In the fourth round, teams with a 2-1 record will face each other. The winners of these matches will advance to the Playoffs. The teams with a 1-2 record will face each other and the losers of these matches will be eliminated from the tournament.
- In the last round, the remaining teams (2-2 record) will face off. The winners of these matches will advance to the Playoffs and the losers will be eliminated from the tournament.
- The eight teams that advance will obtain the "Legend" status and will be automatically invited to the next major.
