'Evolve' Is Dead, Developer Confirms New Projects In The Works

Evolve has finally come to a close according to developer Turtle Rock. It looks like even the switch to a free-to-play model couldn’t keep the online multiplayer game going.

“It’s always hard to leave one of our games behind. Left4Dead was no different and now it’s Evolve’s turn,” Turtle Rock co-founder Chris Ashton wrote in a blog post. “There will always be a special place in our hearts for our past projects. No matter what happens with Evolve in the future, we’ll know it was born in this studio and developed by this team alongside this beautiful community.”

The big problem, according to the post, is Turtle Rock doesn’t own the IP for Evolve. This means when the publisher, 2K, says to stop working on the project, work stops. “There’s a lot that we really wish we could have done, especially taking Stage 2 to consoles, but it looks like that’s just not meant to be,” Ashton shared in the post.

While development on Evolve has ended, the game will still be playable for “the forseeable future” and Turtle Rock will not be closing its doors. In fact, Turtle Rock has “lots of stuff in the works,” so it sounds like they are simply moving on to the next project.

For the Evolve fans still around, Turtle Rock will host one final livestream on the official Evolve Twitch channel on Oct. 27 at 3 p.m. EDT. The developers hope to answer as many questions about Evolve as possible and give a proper goodbye to the community.

So long, Evolve. Here’s to new and exciting futures.
