In The Flash Season 3 episode 9, “The Present,” Barry travels to Earth-3 seeking help from Golden Age Flash, Jay Garrick. The two will face off against Savitar, who until now, Jay thought was just a speed force myth. But tonight won’t be the last time we see Jay Garrick this season. He’ll return in the latter half of Season 3 and his arc will “figure in more prominently,” according to actor John Wesley Shipp.
Shipp hinted at his larger role when CBR asked whether or not Jay would expand on some of the mistakes he told Barry he made as a young speedster. “Well, those hints keep being dropped. I mean, it’s very interesting to me, and I’m going to figure in more prominently in the second half of the season than the first.
“As I said, I’m most involved in this episode than any episode I’ve done on this show so far. So we get to see Jay dealing with this young speedster, we get to see his reaction to Savitar, and there really are some curious things that Jay says that make me, John, wonder, ‘Okay, what’s coming?'”
Shipp also told CBR his character wasn’t even sure Savitar even existed until Barry saw him in person. Considering Savitar’s deep arsenal of powers no other speedster has ever mastered, it wasn’t surprising when Shipp said the battle won’t be easy.
“In fact, there’s some pretty hairy moments, and there’s some pretty hairy moments for Jay, which I really enjoyed shooting coming up against this overwhelming force that is Savitar. But yeah, it doesn’t go incredibly well, the first meeting, and so we pretty much have to go to Jay’s experience and maturity and — together with Barry’s youth and skill — come up with a way to get around this really extraordinary villain.”
Shipp also said to look out for some funny interactions between Wally and Jay. How do you think Jay will react to Wally’s new skills? Let us know in the comments below.
