The new Ghostbusters trailer looks great as far as I’m concerned: goofy, action-packed and fun (if you’re not already determined to be a hater). But give the Ghostbusters trailer a closer look, and you’ll find yourselves with a particularly entertaining easter egg on your hands.
First of all, the new Ghostbusters trailer is below:
At 1:04 into the new trailer, just when Kristen Wiig is told “no one’s better at quantum physics than you,” you can see a close-up on the whiteboard behind her that looks like this:
The text reads "[Pa/RA(NO x RM)alS + UD1es/Lab]COM”. When translated into a normal website URL, that text points you to: http://www.paranormalstudieslab.com , a viral site set up by Columbia Pictures to give everyone some fake science fun.
The site’s About Us states , “The Higgins Institute of Science is home to today's brightest minds and most advanced technology. Together, we are dedicated to furthering mankind's reach in this world and the next.” The site’s content includes schematics on extremely official-looking white-on-blue grids, as well as equipment renderings showing off some of the tools our team of Ghostbusters will be using when they take on paranormal activity.
It’s the site video, however, that is most interesting. Featured prominently on the website is a behind-the-scenes video starring Dr. James Maxwell, a real live scientist who’s a senior postdoctoral associate at MIT’s nuclear science lab.
Dr. Maxwell consulted on Ghostbusters on the interaction of fake ghosts with real physics, answering questions like “How would a proton pack work with as few huge leaps of miraculous science as possible?” (Answer: your Cyclotron evolves into a Synchrotron! Coooool.)
The video also has a brief introduction from director Paul Feig, explaining the relationship between Erin and Abby.
