If you were hoping for a single-player DLC to Grand Theft Auto 5, don’t get your hopes up. GTA Online continues to make so much money, it isn’t worth doing.
As pointed out by Daniel Ahmad, an analyst at Niko Partners, GTA products have a net revenue of over $700 million over the past 12 months. That’s positively insane, especially considering GTA Online is now over three years old.
Here’s where it gets really crazy. Take-Two earned more from GTA in its third year than it did in its second. The re-releases on PS4, Xbox One and PC all came in the second year. This means revenue today is all from catalogue sales and GTA Online.
So where’s the single-player DLC? The often-hinted but never confirmed continuation of the story for Michael, Franklin and Trevor? It’s probably never going to come.
With revenues continuing to soar, Rockstar and Take-Two obviously realize they have a massive success. What do you do with a massive success? Whatever it takes to keep it printing money for you. This is why we’re getting the Biker DLC instead of single-player DLC or stand-alone expansions like the Liberty City Stories.
As for Rockstar’s other projects, like a new Red Dead game, those all seem to have been put on hold for more time to focus on GTA Online. Looking at the company’s output over the past decade, there’s been a release almost every year. GTA IV and Midnight Club: Los Angeles came out in 2008, GTA: Chinatown Wars in 2009, Red Dead Redemption in 2010, LA Noire in 2011, Max Payne 3 in 2012 and GTA V in 2013.
You could argue that GTA V also came out in 2014 and 2015, but those were just ports to different consoles. Even still, nothing will be releaseing by the end of this year.
So what do you think? Is Rockstar too focused on GTA Online to work on new projects? Do you think we’ll be hearing something soon about a new game? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.
