The Hearthstone community has been pretty pissed about one of the cards in the game’s next adventure, One Night In Karazhan, called Purify. Ben Brode, lead developer of Blizzard’s digital card game, released a “Designer Insights” YouTube video on Monday night that attempted to cover all the points players have been complaining about.
Brode explains this card wasn’t meant to insult Priest fans; Brode and his team merely misjudged how the community was feeling. In the video, he claims if he had known exactly how hopeful players were to get a really good Priest card, the team would have held back on revealing Purify and maybe even added a better card in it’s place.
We even got an admission of guilt, with Brode saying he “messed up.” To try and fix the problem, at least a little bit, Hearthstone’s Arena mode will not include Purify when the adventure goes live Aug. 11. This is the first card apart from collectables (Old Murk Eye, Captain’s Parrot ) and Blizzcon exclusives ( E.T.C.) to be excluded from Arena.
Dragon Priest will be a viable deck when ONIK goes live, or at least Brode hopes so. He thinks the Hearthstone development team has created enough neutral cards, like Book Wyrm, to make the deck viable again. Overall, Brode seems super apologetic in the video and respects that the community for the game is just as passionate about it as he is.
The reddit community has been split on Brode’s response. Some are happy we got a sincere response at all, while others are “insulted that the card is even being released.” It’s impressive that Brode stepped up to bat and admitted his mistake, but it doesn't make players any less angry about getting the worst card in Hearthstone for the worst class.
