When Whispers Of The Old Gods came out, Hearthstone players were given a bunch of powerful Warrior cards to tinker with. Bloodhoof Brave is one of the best Taunt minions in the game and Ravaging Ghoul is a Whirlwind on legs. Players used these cards to bolster their Warriors defense, creating strong control decks that could build up armor and outlast their opponents. Unfortunately, as the WOTG meta developed, players started to realize that control decks weren’t that good. Warrior started to slip in the rankings and for a few months, it wasn’t considered a competitive choice.
Something changed in the beginning of June. A deck archetype that’s been around since Blackrock Mountain started to gain some traction on the ladder. Dragon Warrior trades the control Patron Warrior once had, for pure aggression. Before Standard format, DW was a mediocre deck choice that struggled against clearing sticky minions like Haunted Creeper or Piloted Shredder with weapons like Death’s Bite.
Dragon Warrior has taken over the meta with the Vs. Data Report , which compares data from over 50,000 games, ranking it as the most played deck. DW wants to fight for board control early in the game. It uses a ton of low-mana cards, like N’zoth’s First Mate, Fiery War Axe, Blood To Ichor and Sir Finley Mrrgglton. You want to mulligan these cards into your starting hand against control and tempo decks.
Alexstrasza's Champion gains charge when you have a dragon in your hand, and can pretty much run over any other two-mana minion. If you have AC in your hand, you want to mulligan for one of your dragons, Faerie Dragon or Azure Drake . Twilight Guardian or Drakonid Crusher are much better later in the game, a hand full of high-mana dragons turn one is going to be hard to win.
Your minions are nothing more than cannon fodder used to push your advantage. Stall out the game with Fierce Monkey or go on the attack with Kor’kron Elite. If there’s anything too big for the warchief, Grommash Hellscream can show Gul’dan or Jaina what true pain feels like. Dragon Warrior has a tool to deal with anything.
If you play your cards right, you can crush enemies into dust before turn eight. Dragon Warrior is so good because it is more aggressive than Midrange Shaman or Zoolock. Those decks need perfect curves in order to keep any form of board control against this DW.
