So far, we’ve seen more than a dozen new cards for Hearthstone’s newest adventure One Night In Karazhan. There have been some pretty cool cards and some utter duds, but the cards Ben Brode revealed on Fireside on Wednesday night put all of the rest to shame. These two cards will create new deck archetypes, though it remains to be seen if they will be any good.
Let’s start with Silverware Golem , a three-mana Warlock minion that summons itself when discarded. Warlock has a ton of cards that discard cards from your hand, like Succubus and Soulfire , but there’s never been a good card to discard before. In Hearthstone hand and field advantage is everything, deciding if you can risk discarding one or two cards in your hand was always a difficult decision when playing warlock decks.
Blizzard actually gave us a card that we want to to discard, thus making Discard Warlock actually playable. Imagine having a Malchezaar Imp, one of the other new cards in the set, on the field and a Doomguard and Silverware Golem in hand. You get to draw a card, summon a 5/7 and a 3/3 for six mana.
The randomness of this deck will hurt its ability to be competitive. All Warlock discards are random, so the monster made out of of spoons might not be chosen to get discarded. Still, Silverware Golem’s stats are good for a three-mana minion, so just playing it on curve instead of Imp Gang Boss isn’t that bad. I look forward to what other discard cards we have coming in this set, hopefully something that brings cards back that were discarded.
My personal favorite card in One Night In Karazhan has to be Medivh, The Guardian. He’s an eight-mana 7/7 Legendary that equips a weapon called Atiesh . With Atiesh, for every spell you cast, you summon a minion of the same cost. Each time you use this effect you use up one Durability, so you can use it up to a max of three times.
Atiesh has the same effect as Summoning Stone , but with way more versatility. Nobody played the rock because of it’s terrible 0/6 stat line, which you had to waste five mana to play. With Medivh , you get a 7/7 body to go along with the effect, which isn’t that terrible. No word yet on what happens when you play Medivh while you are playing as the Mage class Medivh. Knowing Blizzard, they are going to bicker.
Just imagine the shenanigans you can pull off with this card. Play Coin, Medivh , then Call Of The Wild next turn which summons a Ragnaros for free. My mouth is watering just thinking about it. I promise, if this card becomes popular, Harrison Jones will be a staple in all decks.
One Night In Karazhan is shaping up to be the most impactful expansion since Curse Of Naxxramas. Hearthstone won’t be the same once we all go to Medivh’s party.
