It’s a given Apple will upgrade the iPhone 7’s camera technology just like with every other next-gen model. However, this year’s speculated upgrade is quite interesting. A patent has revealed Apple plans to incorporate a dual-lens, DSLR quality camera system into the iPhone 7, ditching outdated digital zoom. Reliable KGI securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has previously backed claims the iPhone 7 will get the dual camera system.
The two lenses will not only function together to produce better quality photo and video, but each have individual features that change how the iPhone’s camera will works all together. Both lenses can be used simultaneously, for example one lens zooming in and the other out, but at the same time. Apple will show both shots on a split-screen within Camera App. When you are in the midst of capturing photo or video, you’ll have the option to tap the screen to zoom in with one of the lenses. The iPhone can store both sequences separately, or merge them together. The feature will even work with Slo-Mo videos. Since the camera won’t be zooming in digitally via software, the zoomed image will have much higher quality than iPhone 6s.
MacRumors videographer, Matt Gonzalez, created a demo video based on the information in Apple’s dual-camera system patent. Watch below:
Apple has filed many patents for camera enhancements in the last few years, including one for spherical lens camera . Along with the camera upgrade, Apple will reportedly incorporate wireless charging technology and a new stereo speaker in the iPhone 7. A lightning port is rumored to replace the 3.5mm headphone jack. To make up for the traditional headphone jack, Apple may pair the iPhone 7 ‘Pro’ with detachable hybrid EarPods. The iPhone 7 isn’t expected until Fall 2016, although Tim Cook plans to unveil the iPhone 5SE at Apple’s March event later this month.
