Apple has a patent for a high definition spherical lens camera that could be used in future iPhones or iPads. The patent titled “ Small form factor high-resolution camera” released by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office describes a smaller camera lens system that could take up less physical space in mobile devices like tablets and smartphones.

Originally filed in 2013, the patent abstract specifies, “The camera may be implemented in a small package size while still capturing sharp, high-resolution images, making the camera suitable for use in small devices.”

It’s unclear whether Apple intends to apply the “ spherically curved photosensor” camera technology to the iPhone 7, iPhone 5se (previously known as the iPhone 6c), or iPad Air 3. “ The advent of small, mobile multipurpose devices such as smartphones and tablet or pad devices has resulted in a need for high-resolution, small form factor cameras for integration in the devices,” the patent description reads.

Apple’s spherical imaging system may cause barrel distortion, a photo effect which could make an image appear bloated or “spherised.” However, the patent describes a software solution. “Embodiments of the camera may include or leverage an implementation of a distortion correcting algorithm.”

The iPhone 5se and the iPhone 7 are Apple’s two next anticipated releases. Michael Gardiner of iDigitalTimes reported on the latest iPhone 5se development , which is rumored to feature larger storage capacity and a processing chip that rivals the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus. Apple’s iPhone 5c and iPhone 5s inspired 4-inch smartphone will have the same curved feel as the iPhone 6s but will not get 3D Touch. However, the iPhone 5se will have access to the Live Photos feature. According to 9to5Mac , the iPhone 5se will cost less than $500.

Thinner is the trend for every smartphone manufacturer. Each year Apple makes it a point to release a phone sleeker than the year before. A smaller and more efficient camera system could free up space to fulfill consumer demands like larger storage capacity and longer battery life. It is more probable Apple would roll out significant camera changes to the iPhone 7 instead of the iPhone 5se.

The next generation iPhone will not have a headphone jack according to Mac Otakara ’s sources. The classic headphone jack may be replaced with a single universal lightning connector port. In this case, Apple would need to provide a headphone adapter accessory, or pair the iPhone 7 with wireless bluetooth EarPods. This type of redesign could also free up space for more storage and a larger battery.

Apple is expected to debut the iPhone 5se during this year’s March event and release the iPhone 7 in the Fall. Little is known about the iPad Air 3 which was expected in 2015. MyDrivers predicts Apple could launch the next generation iPad Air at the March event as well, alongside the Apple Watch 2.
