Justice League is still more than a year out from theaters, but J.K. Simmons is already done filming. The Whiplash Oscar winner plays Commissioner James Gordon in the upcoming DC Comics movie, which began filming this past April.
Simmons will join Justice League members Batman (Ben Affleck), Superman (Henry Cavill), Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot), Aquaman (Jason Momoa), The Flash (Ezra Miller) and Cyborg (Ray Fisher) on the big screen Nov. 17, 2017. Simmons recently told Entertainment Tonight most of his scenes are with Ben Affleck’s Bat.
"Yeah, mostly with Ben. In this first installment of the Justice League , Commissioner Gordon is not a particularly sizable part. We just kind of introduce him and see a little bit of his interactions with Batman -- and with most of the Justice League. That was a really fun set.”
Simmons also had high praise for Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice director Zack Snyder.
Zack [Snyder] runs sort of a big, happy family and it's obviously, in many ways, a very different work environment when you're working on a big, giant movie like that than a relatively small movie like The Meddler . But at the end of the day, the director is the one who sets the tone. And one of the things that Zack and Lorene have in common is they're just nice, smart, competent, fun people that you don't mind spending a 12-hour day with."
Simmons also played ex-Mayor and New York City Daily Bugle editor J. Jonah Jameson in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy. His role in Justice League leaves his potential role as Jameson in Sony and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Homecoming unclear, though he said he wasn’t opposed to the role during an interview with Entertainment Tonight in February.
The Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice production team is sticking together for Justice League . Charles Roven and Deborah Snyder will co-produce. You’ll see Affleck and Simmons in theaters together before Justice League premieres in the upcoming action thriller The Accountant , which releases Oct. 7, 2016.
