Five years after the surprisingly successful last entry in the series , Men in Black 3 , Sony has announced a new spin off is in the works and is set for a May 17, 2019, release. The untitled project will not focus on, and likely will not even feature, Tommy Lee Jones’ and Will Smith’s agents K and J respectively, but instead usher in some new alien hunters. Steven Spielberg has been tapped to executive produce, Matt Holloway and Art Marcum (who was involved in 2008’s Iron Man and the kick start of the Marvel Cinematic Universe) are attached to write the script. David Beaubaire, of Dreamgirls fame, oversees the project for Sony.
Am I excited? No. But at least this reboot makes sense. Men In Black 3 was released back in 2012 and pulled $624 million in theaters worldwide, to become the highest performing film in the series. It was a modest critical success and served as a fairly admirable book end to Agent J and K’s fifteen year long “arc.” The Men In Black world is absolutely conducive to sequels and spinoffs; the concept of government agents whose job it is to find and detain literal aliens hiding out in New York has the potential to be both hysterical and poignant. My only real cause for trepidation, outside of my natural world-weary, curmudgeonly disposition, is the project is being developed by Sony Pictures, a studio notorious for reviving franchises to disastrous effects.
The Amazing Spider-Man , Ghostbusters , the three fucking Smurf sequels. You know your reboot is in trouble when almost starting a war with North Korea is like the fifth worst thing the studio has ever done.
