The newest trailer for Battlefield 1’s single-player campaign came out on Tuesday afternoon, and it is gorgeous. Everything seen was taken from in-game footage, which is impressive to say the least. The grime, sweat and tears of the soldiers really comes out, like if Pixar made an incredibly bloody movie about World War I.
The weirdest part of this Battlefield 1 trailer, other than it doesn’t tell you anything about the game, is how uplifting it is supposed to be. The music is light and fluffy and everyone has a sense of wonder and amazement on their faces. It feels like a weird tonal shift from the other Battlefield 1 trailers that feature grime, combat and scowls.
There really shouldn’t be a sense of wonder in a game about World War I. I don’t like characters who have to blow off the heads of their fellow men to be cheering when taking pictures upside down of enemy land. I understand it’s a necessary part of making a single-player campaign likable, but it just doesn't make any sense to me.
Maybe the actual campaign will be gritty and dark, but judging by the trailer I doubt it.
Battlefield 1 comes out Oct. 21 on PS4, Xbox One and PC.
