Netflix has confirmed a deal with the BBC to stream the new Top Gear, revealed Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos in an interview with BuzzFeed. According to Sarandos, the deal will essentially "fall under the same deals" of international distribution as the show's previous seasons with Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May.
As for whether this means Top Gear is available in all countries, Sarandos responded:
"Worldwide I don't know, as there are pockets of output deals that block all of those things, so we can only control worldwide on things that we can control outright, or things that we take on very early in their life. But multi-territory for sure."
Speaking of the original trio, there's no question that the BBC and the streaming giant's deal has a lot to do with the show Amazon Prime has prepared.
Amazon has yet to announce a release date, but a recent trailer has revealed that the show starring Jezza, the Hamster and Captain Slow will premiere this fall.
As for BBC's Top Gear, the new hosts Chris Evans and Matt LeBlanc are expected to premiere in May. That's next month! That said, Netflix will not be airing the new season simultaneously. Instead, expect the new season of Top Gear to stream later in the year.
Evans and LeBlanc will also be joined by the Stig, of course, as well as automotive personalities including Formula 1 icon Eddie Jordan, Nurburgring specialist Sabine Schmitz and car journalist Chris Harris.
Stay tuned as we expect to learn more details about BBC's new Top Gear and Amazon's The Still Very Much Untitled Clarkson Hammond May Amazon Prime Show Coming Autumn 2016 in the weeks ahead.
