There's been a lot of hype around virtual reality as we draw closer to the imminent release of the Oculus Rift, HTC Vive and PlayStation VR later this year. That said, virtual reality gaming is still very much in its infancy and developers continue to explore where this technology could take the industry. Finally, a modder has recreated a VR experience for the top gun of triple-A games: GTA 5.
Modder Joseph Delgado created a first-person GTA complete with gesture controls for a "floating gun" on screen. Delgado utilized the Razer Hydra motion controller to complete his VR mod for GTA 5.
However, when it was time to give his mod a test drive, Delgado expressed just how deeply disturbing it is to experience the hyper-violence of GTA in VR:
"I'm really not sure about this," said Delgado in his blog post. "I feel horrible about making this. You actually feel guilty. My mouth dropped the first time I shot someone in my GTA: V VR setup."
The gameplay in Grand Theft Auto had always been extremely controversial. However, while a conventional Dualshock controller may detach GTA from reality, the use of VR and motion controls makes the act of killing a fake NPC.
According to Delgado, the post was only meant to be a quick teaser of his ongoing project, which means the mod is not available to download just yet. For now, check out Delgado's gameplay GIF below:
