A new developer commentary trailer for the action platformer Mira and the Legend of the Djinns has been released. In this trailer, none other than lead programmer Rachid Hassani shares the cultural influences and considerations which played a role in bringing the game to life. He also revealed how his upbringing in Morocco helped to shape the game's narrative and character cast.

In a statement, Rachid Hassani revealed that they’ve thoughtfully crafted the narrative of the game to capture the spirit of Moroccan folklore while at the same time taking into account cultural and religious sensitivities. He added that this resulted in a fine-tuned story world, one inspired by Moroccan culture influences, along with authentic folklore that’s new but recognizable.

You can view the new trailer below:

Mira and the Legend of the Djinns tells the story of the treasure hunter Yuba and the mysterious Djinn named Mira, the first Djinn discovered in generations. The two travel across the devastated world of Fallen Amazgesh to uncover Mira's lost memories and learn what happened to her land and its people. Because of this, Yuba and Mira have agreed to form a spiritual bond, something that no human has ever done outside of fabled legends.

Key features of the game include:

  • Go With the Flow
    • Djinns hold power over the four primal elements of Solar, Celestial, Infernal, and Lunar.
    • Players are given four different weapons to wield, each imbued with one of the four elements.
    • A fluid combat style lets players switch between weapons and elemental modes on the fly even when in combat.
  • Grow the Skill Tree
    • Whether by progressing the story or buying them in-game, players can take down enemies in style with dozens of moves to unlock.
    • Create new movesets and use them to kick some serious butt.
  • Show Me Your Moves
    • Along with the classic Metroidvania abilities like dash, the game features magical abilities unique to the retro genre.
    • A lot of the spells have uses outside of combat.
    • This should encourage players to try out different combos and think outside the box.
  • All Good Things are Multipurpose
    • Throughout the game, players can discover seven different tools, each usable to overcome obstacles, solve puzzles, and weaponize during combat.
    • Certain items are scarcer and these rarities can be acquired by:
      • Doing side quests.
      • Defeating certain enemies.
      • Occasionally purchasing in shops.

A demo of Mira and the Legend of the Djinns is now available on Steam. The game is scheduled to come out sometime this year.
