There have been tons of rumors regarding gaming titles recently. Within just a few days, we have heard leaks about an upcoming State of Play, GTA 5 Trilogy Remaster, and a new PS5-exclusive game by FromSoftware. We also heard about a possible 2021 Call of Duty reveal. That’s a lot of leaks, but you can add one more to the list.
New Wipeout Game
Nick Shpesal, co-host of XboxEra Podcast who is also a reliable leaker, revealed yesterday that a new Wipeout game is in development. According to him, the game will release on PlayStation 5 and the upcoming PS VR 2. The title is apparently in early development so don’t expect any reveals anytime soon. The game is being developed by XDEV, a Sony-owned development studio based in Liverpool, England.
Why It Makes Sense
While Nick is a well-known leaker who has been correct in the past, do keep in mind that there is not an actual announcement yet. So take all of this with a grain of salt. However, the game's existence does seem likely. Sony’s catalog currently doesn’t have a fast-paced racing game, and if we know anything about Sony is that it prefers a diverse game catalog.
Previous Games
It’s no secret that the Wipeout franchise isn’t exactly a system seller for Sony. The series has been sitting on the back burner for years. The last mainline Wipeout game was released back in 2012. Wipeout Omega Collection, a remaster collection of Wipeout HD and Wipeout 2048 was also released in 2017. The collection received a positive reception from both fans and critics.
There are not a lot of arcade-like fast-paced racing games nowadays. Who knows, if the new Wipeout game does well, then maybe this forgotten genre might be revived.
Sony has tons of games in development for the current generation. According to PlayStation Studios' lead Hermen Hulst, they have more than 25 games in development. I guess time will tell if a new Wipeout is one of them or not.
