The latest Nintendo NX rumor comes from Eurogamer and it claims the upcoming Nintendo console will be a handheld with detachable controllers.
According to Eurogamer’s multiple sources, the NX will be a high-powered handheld with its own display but will also have two controller sections on either side of the console, which can be attached or detached.
That’s for on-the-go gaming; when you get home you can hook up your Nintendo NX to your TV to stream on your larger screen. The Nintendo NX will come with a base unit, or docking station, that will connect the handheld to your TV. This information has also been verified by IGN.
Eurogamer is also reporting the rumors of the Nintendo NX having cartridge-based games is true and because of this change the NX will not be backwards compatible.
The NX will run on a new operating system and not on Android, as earlier rumors suggested.
Nvidia’s mobile processor, Tegra, will power the NX and as Eurogamer points out, graphical comparisons with current consoles are difficult due to the vastly different nature of the device. They are also reporting that Nintendo is not chasing graphical parity. In fact, Nintendo is sacrificing power to ensure it can squeeze all of this technology into a handheld.
In another report, Eurogamer claimed the Tegra processor’s power will be greater than the Xbox 360 and PS3, but less than the PS4.
Another source told Eurogamer Nintendo has “moved up a gear” within the company ahead of its console unveiling, which is slated for September.
There is a lot to digest from Eurogamer’s report on the Nintendo NX. The cartridge-based system is in line with earlier reports while the handheld/home console hybrid has long been a rumor for Nintendo’s next console.
Of course, this is all unverified until Nintendo comes forward with information which will not come until later this year.
Nintendo provided Eurogamer with the following statement.
"Nintendo has not made any new official announcements regarding NX which is due to launch in March 2017. As such [we're] unable to comment on the various rumours and speculations circulating."
The Nintendo NX is slated for a March 2017 release.
