Nintendo Switch was revealed in a trailer last week alongside a brand new Pro Controller design. In a now-private YouTube interview with GameXplain, one of the Nintendo Switch spot’s actors discussed how the new remote stacks up against PS4 and Xbox One controllers.
Twitch streamer and confessed Nintendo fanboy dckhisikhan took part in the Switch reveal ad as a Splatoon coach, and he recently spoke about his time on the project. Much of the chat remains hard to find since it’s been removed at the interviewee's request, but we managed to track down a few direct quotes that were interesting.
“The Pro Controller is probably one of the most comfortable controllers I have ever held in my hands,” dckhisikhan said. “Honestly, by a good margin, it’s the most comfortable controller I have ever held.” Prior to handling the full-size Switch remote, he said that he favored the Xbox One’s sturdier input design the most. As it stands right now, Nintendo’s alternative apparently feels even better than that. While he wasn’t playing actual games, he did have more than enough time to test simulated movements and suggested that everything felt expertly designed.
In fact, his only referenced negative comment had to do with the Switch’s asymmetrical analog stick design. By contrast, the Wii U’s GamePad has its sticks situated across from one another. Though, he did muse that the change was something he could get used to.
While we don’t have any more quotes to back up the conversation, we were able to watch the full discussion before it was taken offline. In addition to hashing out the general feel of the console and controllers, which was generally positive, the streamer recalled the casting process for the commercial. Gamers were asked to apply for a job in the Vancouver area, and, if selected for the trailer, they were told to meet at a specific, secret location. From there, these actors became the first members of the public to go hands on with the Switch.
Of course, as is to be expected, Nintendo was insanely secretive throughout the filming. Producers attached to the job reportedly said the hardware maker was one of the strictest clients they’ve ever dealt with. In fact, the product’s name was kept under such tight wraps that it was disguised by black tape until lower-level assistants left the room.
With so many rules in place, dickhiskhan didn’t get much of a feel for the unit’s Joy-Con portable controllers. In fact, he mused that he hadn’t even grasped the idea of flipping two Joy-Cons on their sides to offer instantaneous multiplayer. That particular feature was a surprise reveal even for the actor himself.
While unconfirmed, it’s speculated that NDA concerns compelled the actor to ask for the GameXplain interview to be scrapped. He teased that he knows a good deal more about the hardware that he cannot say.
The Nintendo Switch is expected to release in March 2017 with more details coming next year.
