Publisher Square Enix and developer Acquire premiered new footage for Octopath Traveler II, the upcoming turn-based JRPG launching for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam on February 24, 2023. The gameplay footage debuted during the publisher’s special livestream broadcast at Tokyo Game Show 2022, and features 20 minutes of gameplay and characters in action. Check out the gameplay footage for Octopath Traveler II below.
As detailed via the official reveal and announcement, Octopath Traveler II is set in a brand-new continent and features new characters from its predecessor, Octopath Traveler. However, the unique art style and gameplay aspects are retained, with new storylines to follow and characters to play as. Square Enix also revealed some new gameplay mechanics that players can expect within the sequel, as demonstrated in the gameplay footage above.
Octopath Traveler II is a turn-based and party-based JRPG taking place in Solistia, a new land comprising an eastern and western continent divided by a sea. It’s set in a bustling era, where large vessels navigate busy sea routes and steam power that helped humanity achieve new technologies. In this realm, eight travelers from various regions across the land venture into different storylines for unique reasons. You play as these eight travelers, using their abilities and skills along with their respective journeys.
One of Octopath Traveler’s and Octopath Traveler II’s key selling points is its unique art design, mixing 2D side-scrolling graphics with HD environments and characters. The fusion of retro pixel art and 3DCG is unlike anything else in the genre today. Like its predecessor, Octopath Traveler II’s travelers each feature a unique set of Path Actions that they can use to battle townspeople, obtain items, take others on their travels, and more. The fan-favorite and familiar mechanics such as the Break and Boost system, freedom to develop each travelers’ jobs and skills, and more have also been preserved for that unique Octopath JRPG flavor.
The game’s predecessor, Octopath Traveler, is also available on Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, Stadia, and PC via Steam.
