Oculus Rift-exclusive games like Lucky’s Tale are now available to play on the HTC Vive thanks to reddit user CrossVR. All you have to do is download and install the right files. The project is still in its infancy right now, so there could be bugs or other issues you might encounter if you try to use it yourself.
Right now, CrossVR has confirmed Lucky’s Tale and Oculus Dreamdeck work on the Vive thanks to his hack. Other users in the reddit thread are adding that they have gotten other Oculus Home and non-Home software using the Oculus SDK to work as well.
Even more reports are claiming this patch will work with any game made for Oculus using Unity or Unreal Engine 4.
If you want to download and install the files yourself, head over to the LibreVR / Revive Github page to find the project. Make sure you download and read through the README text to make sure you’re doing everything as planned.
While this certainly is cool for Vive owners, it will be interesting to see what Oculus does about the hack. On one hand, Oculus could embrace it and offer official Vive support for Rift-exclusive games. This would give a bump to Oculus software, but would likely hurt Rift hardware sales. On the other, the company could see this as a threat and patch their software to lock this hack out. While this would lock down Oculus exclusivity again, it could also drive away gamers who are just looking to play some games.
As for the hack itself, more updates are sure to continue rolling out to allow even more games to work on the Vive. Expect this project to keep getting worked on until Oculus either officially embraces it, or threatens legal action.
So what do you think? Are you interested in playing any Oculus-exclusive games on the Vive? How do you think Oculus should respond to this hack? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.
