Oculus CEO Brendan Iribe announced on Twitter the Oculus Rift VR headset has shipped. Deliveries for the first round of Rift headsets begin on March 28.
Oculus previously stated that Kickstarter backers who opted to fund the development kit (which started at $300) will receive the final product for free . Always nice to see faithful Kickstarter backers get that love back in the form of promises kept, bonuses given and products shipped on time.
It’s a historic moment in gaming: the arrival of the first VR headsets in the hands of the very first , most eager adopters. The pre-orders for Oculus Rift back in January sold out almost immediately, meaning that orders placed today won’t be fulfilled until July 2016 at earliest.
That means you’ll have to wait to hold your precious little piece of the consumer VR pie in your hands - at least, if you have your heart set on Oculus. Rival VR offerings HTC Vive and Playstation VR ship in early April and this fall respectively, if you like that sort of thing .
Oculus bundles include a Rift headset bundle with an Xbox One controller and copies of launch titles EVE: Valkyrie and Lucky's Tale for a jaunty $599.99. (A complete list of VR games for 2016 is available here .) Oculus is also working with Alienware , Dell and Asus for PC bundles that will be compatible with the Rift headset. The bundles start at $1,499, including the price of the headset.
