The numbers are in, and Overwatch is the biggest new IP of all time. These numbers are based off of the stats Blizzard has released for the Overwatch beta.
According to Blizzard, Overwatch was played by a whopping 9.7 million players across PS4, Xbox One and PC. Combined, Overwatch was played for 81 million hours, and there were 37 million matches that took place. That’s a whole heck of a lot of gaming.
How do those numbers stack up to other betas? It eclipses them. The Division, for example, only has 9.5 million registered users. The beta, while impressive, had 6.4 million players. Destiny was even smaller, with 4.6 million.
Only one beta has come close to the numbers Overwatch has put up: Star Wars Battlefront. A major difference here is that Battlefront has a rabid fanbase already, and it’s a freaking Star Wars game. Of course everyone wants to play that.
This is all based on beta numbers, so we’ll have to wait until May 24 until we know for sure how Overwatch will do. Based on trends from the other game betas, even more players will be getting into the new team-based shooter once it has released.
Overwatch will be released on PS4, Xbox One and PC on May 24.
