If the leaked photos from three Swiss retailers via NeoGAF are true, then the price of the highly-anticipated PlayStation VR has been revealed. According to retailers Brack, Techmania, and Internet.ch, Sony's headset will fall somewhere in between €450-€500, or approximately $435-$544 USD.
This leak also suggests that the PlayStation VR price will undercut the $599 Oculus Rift, although not by much if Sony prices its new device at the higher end of the spectrum. In fact, one could argue that a PlayStation VR asking above $499 might even be overpriced given the Sony's slightly inferior hardware specs. The PlayStation VR only displays 1920 x 1080 resolution compared to the sharper 2160 x 1200 resolution found in the Oculus Rift as well as the HTC Vive. What's more, while the Rift and Vive comes with a slew of complementing peripherals, the PlayStation 4 already has a strong foundation of accessories like the PlayStation Eye camera, and PlayStation Move controller which are sold separately.
There's no cement information regarding exactly what Sony will put in the box when it ships out the PlayStation VR, but the table of contents will heavily dictate whether or not the new headset will be worth its price tag. It's also worth noting that just as the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive will demand some high-end PC hardware requirements, the PlayStation VR will require an external processor to handle the demands of virtual reality graphics. If Sony includes the external processor necessary to make the headset immediately ready to play on the console, then the projected PlayStation VR price tag could be considered a relative bargain.
No matter how it's packaged, a ballpark price tag of $499 makes the PlayStation VR even more costly than the PS4 console. Do you think the new PlayStation VR will be worth it? Let us know in the comment section below.
