Pokémon Go has gone through a ton of changes since it came out. Pokémon run away more, attacks have been changed and, of course, there’s the whole “three-step bug” fiasco . Some of the more overpowered skillsets, like Water Gun, have been nerfed to the ground, creating room for other pocket monsters to rise to the top of the ladder. Though some of the best Pokémon are still on top, like Vaporeon, new guys, like Poliwrath, have started to pop up.

Reddit user Archangelus has created a nifty chart that shows what Pokémon are currently the strongest for attacking or defending a gym. Damage per second is different for each, some moves do more when you're trying to secure a gym, while others are better on Pokémon you leave behind at a gym to defend. An attacking Pokémon can unleash its basic attack as fast as you can tap while a defender is being controlled by an AI so can only attack once every two seconds.
Bubble is a garbage move when trying to attack, but on defense it has the highest DPS. It’s animation is much too slow to be a consistent attack move, but when you hand it over to a mindless computer, you can really start hurting some weaker Pokémon.
If you are still trying to be the king of your local Pokémon gym, here are some of the best Pokémon for beating and keeping your throne.
- Dragonite
- Lapras
- Snorlax
- Poliwrath
- Vaporeon
Once/if battling other trainers comes to Pokémon Go , the whole meta might shift once again. Enjoy training your Lapras and Snorlax with high IVs while you can.
