I’m not really a fan of the Alolan forms of Pokémon in the next game in the series, Pokémon Sun and Moon . Most of them feel rushed and gimmicky, like snow Vulpix or Surfing Raichu, or even the dumb dragon Executor . A gimmick is fine, but the Pokémon Company really dropped the ball on their newest creations.

In the latest CoroCoro leak we got our first look at the newest member of the Hawaiian bunch, Grimer. Alolan Grimer is a Dark/Poison type who looks like he got into some Pikachu candy. Seriously, all they could come up with a Pokémon made of sludge was to turn him slightly green and give him a yellow mouth? It’s a disappointment to creatives, who could have gone wild with the idea.

Austininferno on Instagram came up with a great Grimer and Muk combo that would turn him into lava. Hawaii has volcanoes, it just makes perfect sense. Sure, there’s already a Pokémon made of magma named Slugma, but it’s not like the Pokémon Company doesn't love to double dip. How many Pokémon do we have made out of snow? Abomasnow, Vanilluxe and Alola Vulpix are just a few.

I decided to spend way too much time today staring at the new Alolan Grimer to try and figure out what the hell it is actually made of:

  • A shaved Oscar The Grouch eating a lemon popsicle.

  • Gum on the bottom of your shoe after a walk in a swamp.

  • A regular Grimer with some ugly spraypaint.

If the Pokémon Company wants to do unique versions of old Pokémon, that’s cool, but they need to be more than just a palette change with a different elemental type. Turn a Qwilfish into some sushi, a Yanma into a mecha or a Wooper into an alligator, just something that keeps the original spirit of the Pokémon while changing its physical aesthetics.
