Before the Rainbow Six Siege Mid-Season Reinforcement patch last week, it was difficult to say which operator is the most difficult in a 1v1 standoff. But in a situation where all cameras are shot out, all traps and grenades are spent, and it's down to an old-fashioned gun duel, the last person I want to face is Glaz and his OP thermal scope.

The map with the most obvious advantage is the Presidential Plane. Defenders that try to hunker down at the meeting room, bedroom, or coach are already vulnerable to Glaz's window-piercing rounds. However, the new thermal scope upgrade makes it even more difficult for defenders to hide. Even peeks down the luggage hold are arguably to Glaz's favor.

On paper, Glaz is not a strong close quarter combat operator due to a sniper rifle's lower fire rate and longer reload time. However, in a game where whoever lands the first shot usually ends the match, it's more difficult to conceal yourself from Glaz' thermal indicator. Case in point, while I was using a kill-hole from the master bedroom in the house map, looking down the corner stairs next to construction (our team also made murder-holes looking down from the bathroom and child's bedroom), my glowing yellow face gave away the position of what could have been a less noticeable hole in the wall.

But how should players counter Glaz? At this point, the only recommendation I have is to avoid peeking. Instead, conceal your position, if possible, and force Glaz to push forward. It will not only add mental stress for the Glaz user, but will also close the distance and give him less of a disadvantage in close-quarters. Secondly, if it's not a 1v1 situation, forcing Glaz to push will also give your teammates an opportunity to flank.

And what could Ubisoft possibly do to balance Glaz's new ability? Considering enemies light up from Glaz' thermal scope, defenders may feel less like a sitting duck if Glaz was somehow more vulnerable when using the sight as well. It would be interesting if Glaz's sight comes with a laser sight. Yes, on one hand it may make Glaz's hip fire accuracy more deadly, but on the other hand, if you can spot the laser, then you can spot Glaz. A second possible way Ubisoft can allow defenders to equalize the playing field against Glaz is by introducing a new operator. Jager can be a good counter if Glaz throws smoke to hide his position, but a future defender with a thermal ability that can cut through the fog will also be a great asset for the team.

Have you been using Glaz in Rainbow Six Siege? How have you been able to counter the operator's thermal scope? Let us know in the comment section below.
