The Rick and Morty Twitter account has released two concept art images from Rick and Morty Season 3. Both appear to be from the season premiere and reveal quite a bit about the kind of narrative we should expect when Episode 1 finally lands.
At the end of Rick and Morty Season 2, Rick Sanchez turned himself into the Galactic Federation and wasn’t carted away to a maximum security prison. As a side effect of his capture, Earth was inducted into the Federation, radically altering planetary politics and upsetting the balance between sci-fi weirdness and mundane suburban life we’ve come to expect from Rick and Morty. When Rick and Morty Season 3 premieres, we may be looking at a very different status quo.
The concept art on display from Season 3 promises the first episode won’t pull any cheats. Rick is still very much in prison, leaving Morty, Summer, Beth and Jerry to fend for themselves. Rick has been gone long enough that they’ve even cleared out his garage laboratory:
Escape from Galactic Federation prison isn’t going to be easy, if this other piece of concept art is any indication:
That’s the Gromflamite Prison General, an especially corpulent and fascistic-looking specimen of the dominant Federation species. “Look forward to disliking this guy,” the tweet announces.
It looks like we’ll be getting to know some of the characters in the Galactic Federation prison. This guy seems like some sort of warden. His uniform evokes POW camp commanders like Luftwaffe Colonel von Luger in The Great Escape and Rittmeister von Rauffenstein in La Grande Illusion. Expect this monstrous fellow to be a significant antagonist to Rick and Morty’s plans, at least in the Rick and Morty Season 3 premiere.
While there’s not yet an exact release date for Rick and Morty Season 3 Episode 1, we can expect to see this prison general in action sometime later this year on Adult Swim.
