The entire video game industry and gamers across the world were in an uproar this weekend, as what is possibly the biggest leak in the history of gaming has just happened. Despite the legendary secrecy, and perhaps compounded by its massive amounts of hype, tons of gameplay footage for the upcoming GTA 6 leaked all over the internet, showing off characters, the game’s setting, its NPCs and their various interactions, and much more. What makes this leak much more egregious is that it apparently involves source code for both GTA 5 and GTA 6 and that the leaker is reportedly holding this hostage over developer Rockstar Games.
While some have opined that the footage may be fake, Rockstar Games came out yesterday to officially confirm that the leak was solid and that it is indeed early development footage for GTA 6. The developer also shared a short message on Twitter about the leak, expressing its disappointment and thanking players for their support. Check it out below.
According to the message, it appears that the leak comes from a network intrusion that the leaker took advantage of to illegally access and download confidential information from the Rockstar Games systems. What’s more, the studio also eased the fears of fans who thought that this leak will somehow affect GTA 6’s development. As worded in the message, Rockstar Games confirms that “we do not anticipate any disruption to our live game services nor any long-term effect on the development of our ongoing projects.”
GTA 6 is probably one of the most popular upcoming games across the entire video game industry. It’s no surprise that any early information about its development is considered by many as the holy grail of video game leaks, and the fact that it happened is nothing short of unbelievable. The great news is that this rather large data leak has not hindered Rockstar Games and its development for GTA 6, as the game cannot launch soon enough. Its predecessor, the critically acclaimed GTA 5, just turned nine years old a few days ago.
