It’s fall, and that means it’s South Park time! South Park season 20 is now officially out, after a long, long wait, and that’s truly exciting news. Just as exciting: the newest South Park game comes out this year as well. Right now, the South Park: The Fractured But Whole release date is scheduled for December 6, 2016… coincidentally, right before or after we would expect the South Park season 20 finale to air. And trust me… that’s no coincidence.
South Park Season 20 And The South Park: The Fractured But Whole Release Date
South Park season 20, which premiered on Sept. 14, has ten episodes, as the seasons usually do nowadays. That means it will run for ten weeks, but the show has a handful of dark weeks along the way… usually one for Thanksgiving and one or two others. Last year, South Park season 19 ran from Sept. 16 to Dec. 9. This year, we’re starting on Sept. 14, and probably running until either Nov. 30 or—more likely—Dec. 7. That means the South Park season 20 finale will come either six days before, or one day after, the release of The Fractured But Whole. Those cursed Tuesday video game release dates!
Either way, it’s a clear choice on South Park and Ubisoft’s part to wrap the season and immediately release the game right on top of it. Last time around, The Stick of Truth came out about three months after the end of South Park season 17, despite a direct and immediate plot tie-in. But that was because of various delays in the game for the purposes of bug fixing. It was supposed to come out hot on the heels of the season.
This time, that’s exactly what will happen: South Park season 20 will end, and South Park: The Fractured But Whole will come out. Will there be a story connection, a Coon arc to lead into the game? I certainly don’t know yet, and neither does anyone else besides Matt and Trey. But it’s a big potential opportunity for the show. And, worst case, it means we’ll have lots more South Park all through the winter.
- tactical combat
- great environmental puzzles
- seamless adaptation of South Park
- engaging boss encounters
- Coon and Friends parody was already stale
- sometimes more referential than funny on its own
- several game mechanics feel extraneous
