Canada-based indie studio Thunder Lotus has just came out with a new video trailer for their upcoming emotional 2D adventure game, Spiritfarer. The video trailer, entitled Gwen runs for two minutes and showcases a number of the game’s mechanics.
For those who are not familiar with the title, Spiritfarer tells the story of Stella, a ferrymaster for the deceased. As the ferrymaster, you are in charge of transporting the spirits through what lies between the world of the living and the dead. It is also your responsibility that the spirits that board your boat will have the most pleasant experiences before finally releasing them into the afterlife.
The gameplay revolves around farming, mining, fishing, harvesting, cooking, and crafting your way across mystical seas, all the while being accompanied by the most unique spirits. It also offers co-op play where a second player can assume the role of Daffodil the Cat. There are dozens of activities you will go through during your journey, and at times, your platforming skills may be needed in specific situations. It also adds customization options, such as making your boat your own by building and improving it, and adding a variety of cosmetics for Stella and even Daffodil the Cat.
It is during the journey where you will experience moving and emotional stories with your passengers, punctuated by the most memorable moments in each and every trip. After spending quality time with your spirit passengers, you will ultimately learn how to say goodbye to the friends you’ve made along the way.
The trailer Gwen showed one such trip, wherein Stella transported an anthropomorphic moose (or deer), which I would assume is Gwen. A montage of their trip showing them cooking cakes, planting carrots, and ultimately punctuated by a touching goodbye when Gwen’s spirits finally moves on.
Spitfarer will be rowing its way to the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC (Windows, Mac and Linux) in 2020. It will also be open to the public at PAX West 2019, which will be held at the Washington State Convention Center in Seattle from August 30 to September 2.
