Star Citizen ’s latest 3.0 PTU build is available now for all backers who’ve supported the project. That essentially means all Cloud Imperium Games devotees have the chance to get their first taste of traversal between moons, shopping and the game’s basic mission system. Official release notes from the developer detail how you can get your copy now.

HOW TO GET IN THE STAR CITIZEN 3.0 PTU PUBLIC TEST

  1. Download the installer here
  2. While that’s downloading, copy your account credentials to the PTU site here. If you get an “access denied” message, make sure you’re signed in on the left side of the page.
  3. Once the copy process is complete, you’ll be emailed a temporary PTU access password.
  4. Boot up the game once the install process is complete, and enter your account credentials with the provided password. You should be able to join instances of the latest Star Citizen 3.0 PTU build.

As with most early access promotions, we feel it necessary to approach this situation with a few caveats. So if the process described above is not working for you, simply be patient and keep trying. The server load has been especially massive since the test began early Friday morning, and it will likely continue to be heavy on what’s expected to be a very important day for the game itself.

Also, just because the PTU build is live, that doesn’t mean this is the “live” build of Star Citizen 3.0. Because it’s still in the PTU, players should expect lots of bugs, crashes and low framerates. CIG has been pretty good about providing rapid fixes using the updated patcher, but this is still far from a fully polished release. As of last week’s episode of Around The Verse, there were still 176 must-fix issues to resolve before the live build would be ready for release. Those with low-spec PCs or a low tolerance for buggy software are encouraged to wait for that live build.

This live PTU test also arrives amidst widespread discontent amongst the Star Citizen faithful following the last-minute delay of Thursday’s advertised Around The Verse holiday special. The developer cited unforeseen “technical issues” that would delay the stream past a suitable hour for international audiences. As a result, the super-charged episode is set to premiere Friday at 3 p.m. EST.

The stream will focus on a wide range of developments across the Star Citizen universe, including a first look at gameplay for the single-player module, Squadron 42. Ahead of that reveal, you can watch a teaser from IGN First. In contrast to past holiday celebrations that featured fully live antics, everything shown this year will be pre-recorded.

Star Citizen is available in alpha for project backers on PC.
