In the final shot of Star Wars: The Force Awakens Rey offers Luke Skywalker his father’s lightsaber, lost to Luke since Darth Vader chopped off his sword hand above the gas giant Bespin. With Rey’s Force powers manifesting on Starkiller Base, the plot of Star Wars: Episode 8 will undoubtedly tackle her training, as the last Jedi, Luke Skywalker, teaches her the ways of The Force. But will the Luke Skywalker of Star Wars: Episode 8 be Luke Prime or Bigger Luke?
You may not be aware, but something very strange is going on with Luke Skywalker in the original Star Wars. According to the obsessive observations made by contributors to the Bigger Luke wiki, there are actually two Luke Skywalkers in Star Wars: a regular Luke, known as Luke Prime, and a ever-so-slightly taller Luke, dubbed by conspiracists and Star Wars close-readers as “Bigger Luke.”
How Much Bigger Is Bigger Luke?
How much bigger? According to the Bigger Luke wiki, “It is generally agreed that Bigger Luke is approximately two to three centimeters / approximately an inch taller than Regular Luke.”
Check out the disparity for yourself, in this graphic from the Bigger Luke wiki that highlights the difference between Luke Prime and Bigger Luke:
So what’s going on here? Is there an in-continuity explanation for the two different Lukes? Did Lucas intend for his Star Wars continuity to contain both a short and slightly-less-short Luke Skywalker? There are two prevailing theories propagated by Bigger Luke proponents.
- “The Canon Luke Hypothesis , sometimes simply The Bigger Luke Hypothesis , in which it is theorized that within the Star Wars universe and canon there does indeed exist a version of Luke Skywalker that is slightly larger than a posited regular Luke Skywalker, or Luke Prime."
- "The Hamill Hypothesis, in which it is theorized that there exists an uncredited Mark Hamill look-alike who was used in certain scenes of the original trilogy for undisclosed reasons and whose identity has yet to be determined.”
These are, of course, radically different propositions. The Canon Luke Hypothesis would suggest that two Lukes are threaded throughout the Star Wars movies. It could even be the case that Skywalker line has a body type capable of morphing, as seen in Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith, where Anakin appears to alter shape (watch the hair):
As the original Star Wars and its two Lukes remains canon, proponents of this theory should keep a close eye on Luke Skywalker throughout Star Wars: Episode 8.
'Star Wars: Episode 8', The Conspiracy Continues?
The second version of the Bigger Luke theory, The Hamill Hypothesis, offers us no insight into plot spoilers for Star Wars: Episode 8, but it does open up an entire world of Mark Hamill and George Lucas conspiracy possibilities.
It seems likely we’ll never know the truth behind the Bigger Luke theory. With Han Solo dead, the standard metric for evaluating Luke Prime and Bigger Luke—Han Pics—can no longer be used as a diagnostic tool in Star Wars: Episode 8.
So will it be Luke Prime or Bigger Luke in Star Wars: Episode 8? Chances are we’ll never know the true answer. Still, Mark Hamill addressed the controversy, if indirectly, on Twitter:
