Nintendo might be dusting off their Virtual Boys to give VR another shot. Dr. Serkan Toto, CEO of Tokyo-based game industry consultancy Kantan Games, who reported on the latest Nintendo NX rumors claiming the company is working on Super Smash Bros for the next-gen console, claims Nintendo is thinking about stepping into VR territory.
Toto posted on his Twitter account Nintendo didn’t offer any details at the briefing as to what they meant by “looking” into VR. Still, Nintendo has some pretty exciting things in store for console lovers. Before the VR buzz, Wall Street Journal reported Nintendo might be planning to launch a new handheld console in 2016.
Hiroshi Hayase, a senior principal analyst at IHS Technology, part of IHS, told The Wall Street Journal they expect shipments of displays sized between 3.1-inches and 5.0-inches wide to increase to 16.5 million units this year.
“We expect a small recovery in shipments of flat-panel displays for game devices because of Nintendo’s new game hardware expected to be released in 2016,” Hayase said.
A next-gen console, a handheld and possible talks for VR? 2016 might be the year of Nintendo. If Nintendo does decide to revive the defunct Virtual Boy, they better include a retro Mario Tennis with redlines and everything! It was the only game I played on the Virtual Boy as a kid. Let me have my nostalgia Nintendo. Did you play the Virtual Boy as a kid? Leave the titles of your favorite games in the comments below.
