It’s Tuesday, Feb. 9 at this time of writing, which means that the release of Deadpool is still three days away. And yet, a sequel for the Merc with a Mouth is already in the works, according to The Hollywood Reporter . Deadpool 2 was probably a sure bet, but news of its development so early in the game is certainly a tad surprising.
20th Century Fox isn’t exactly taking the ballsiest of risks, however. Not only are the early reviews for Tim Miller’s Deadpool positive , but the studio is estimated to bank at least $65-70 million during its opening weekend. Projections suggest crossing the $100 million mark is inevitable, indicating that an investment in a follow-up film is not only safe, but smart.
So far we know that screenwriting team Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick will return to write the sequel to Deadpool. Though director Tim Miller and star Ryan Reynolds aren’t confirmed as of now, reports claim that Fox is eager to keep the creative forces behind the original movie intact. Reynolds in particular appears to carry the weight of the film with his snarky acting, so the studio will certainly want to tie him down to the franchise a la Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man.
I have yet to see Deadpool ahead of its release, so it’s a bit difficult to predict plot direction. But from what I’ve read, the film centers around a generic (but hilarious) revenge plot. Could this be any indication of what to expect in Deadpool 2? We’ll find out soon enough.
Step one begins with watching the first Deadpool, which is due in theaters this Friday, Feb. 12. What are your predictions for the Merc with a Mouth’s first solo feature? How about Deadpool 2? Let us know in the comment section below!
