Clive Barker captures the darkest side of the 80’s spirit in this icky dive into broken humans, death drive sexual impulse, and mythic quasi-demonology. Simultaneously elevated—with baroque dialogue and Pinhead’s earnest philosophy—and deeply grungy, gooey, sleazy, Hellraiser is an upsetting treat, like ice cream from curdled milk.

12. You’re Next

While modern mainstream horror has been built on too many bad fads and found footage, a number of new horror voices are bubbling up through the cracks. And while Ben Wheatley, Jennifer Kent, Adam Wingard, nor Ti West have yet throttled an entire decade like John Carpenter did, many are just getting started. 2011’s You’re Next is a perfect example of what the current crop can offer, with a ripping pace, self-aware tone, and plenty of blood.

Japanese insanity inside a haunted house loaded with carnivorous pianos, evil cats, and floating heads. There’s nothing quite like it, House is more seizure than movie.

A fantastic coming-of-age werewolf movie, Ginger Snaps is raw, brutal, and very angsty. Not since An American Werewolf in London have such fantastic werewolf effects been combined with characters you actually care about.

9. Cannibal Holocaust

While a genuinely nasty movie, featuring real animals being torn apart and sickening cannibal violence, Cannibal Holocaust is also a surprisingly well-made pseudo-documentary. While Cannibal Holocaust is unlikely to trick anyone with its found footage stylings, the grungy vibe is sure to make your skin crawl.

8. Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer

Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer has none of the compensations horror movie fans have come to expect for their time. There is no entertaining gore (though Henry does get blood), no supernatural distance, and no outrageous high concept. Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer is unlike any other serial killer movie you've ever seen because there is nothing elevated in Henry's work. He is not an urbane genius like Hannibal Lecter, or a creature of alien ritual like Buffalo Bill. Instead, Henry is just a squalid little man who kills and kills and kills. While not exactly entertaining, Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer is horror.
