The Ray Wise renaissance continues in new found-footage movie “Digging Up The Marrow,” which looks to combine the monsters of “Pan’s Labyrinth” with the found footage of really bad movies that shouldn’t be made. “Digging Up The Marrow” comes from horror movie writer/director Adam Green, known for well-intentioned slasher tribute series “Hatchet” and tense survival thriller “Frozen” (no, not that one). “Digging Up The Marrow” has a number of exciting elements on display in the first trailer, check it out:

Inspired by the art of Alex Pardee, “Digging Up The Marrow” looks like a gory combination of Guillermo del Toro and David Cronenberg. The trailer for “Digging Up The Marrow” is loaded with Pardee-designed monsters. Pardee, who is known for his movie posters and gruesome designs, but this will be his first foray into movie monster design (his art is also featured in “This the End”).

The Monsters of “Pan’s Labyrinth”

Unfortunately, “Digging Up The Marrow” is another regrettable entry in the found footage genre. Originally a creative workaround for low-budget projects like “The Blair Witch Project,” found footage has become a lame way for studio’s to attempt cash-grab horror movies without spending much money.

“The Blair Witch Project” Trailer

Sure, there have been good found footage movies (“Cannibal Holocaust,” “Cloverfield,” “Trollhunter,” and “Chronicle” come to mind), but it’s more often a sign of laziness, with 18 found footage horror movies in 2014, not a single one worth the Mini-DV it was shot on.

If “Digging Up The Marrow” can succeed in delivering lots of creative monster goods, it might well be worth the nauseous shaking. Early screenings for “Digging Up The Marrow” didn’t exactly generate a lot of enthusiasm, but a review of the movie’s final cut has yet to appear.

“Digging Up The Marrow” plans to emulate the road show model of movie distribution pioneered by “Paranormal Activity.” Here are the screening dates announced so far:

  • Thurs 2/12 – Landmark Shattuck (Berkeley, CA)
  • Mon 2/16 – Landmark Kendall (Boston, MA)
  • Tues 2/17 – Landmark Sunshine (NYC, NY)
  • Wed 2/18 – Alamo South Lamar (Austin, TX)
  • Thurs 2/19 – Landmark Regent (Westwood, CA)

Sure, found footage movies suck, but the army of monsters on display in “Digging Up The Marrow” are intriguing enough to be worth a look.
